Considered wildly controversial at the time of its release, `The Fruit of the Tree' is a departure from the norm for Edith Wharton. It follows the story of George Amhurst, the assistant manager of a textile mill in New England. While his heart might be in the right place, when he marries the widow of a mill owner, he might be forced to compromise in his ideals. She moved to France in 1923, where she continued to write until her death.
