The Iliad is an epic poem that describes the Trojan War fought between the Trojans and the Achaeans. The story begins in medias res, with Achilles declaring that he and his men will no longer fight for Agamemnon. The soldiers' morale has worn thin after nine years of war. The gods participate in human warfare and fight among themselves. The true hero of the Iliad is left up to interpretation, as both Achilles and Hector possess heroic qualities. The concept of kleos, or glory earned in heroic battle, is explored throughout the poem. The Iliad expresses disdain for tactical trickery and emphasizes the importance of honor and respect. The poem has had a significant influence on arts and culture, including literature, film, and theater. Numerous translations of the Iliad exist, each with its own unique style and interpretation.

Homer
