The Turn of the Screw (English)
Une gouvernante affronte l’angoisse et le mystère dans un manoir hanté par des secrets inavouables. La frontière entre réalité et folie s’efface.
The Turn of the Screw is a psychological ghost story centered on a young governess who is hired to care for two orphaned children, Miles and Flora, at a remote country house called Bly. Their uncle, who employs her, gives her one strict instruction: she must never trouble him about anything. This command leaves her isolated and responsible for everything that happens.
At first, the governess is enchanted by the beauty of the house and by the children, who seem unusually charming, intelligent, and innocent. She wants to prove herself worthy of her position and imagines herself as a protector. But this idealized vision begins to collapse when she sees mysterious figures on the grounds and inside the house.
She learns that the figures resemble Peter Quint, the uncle’s former valet, and Miss Jessel, the previous governess. Both are dead, and both had troubling relationships with the children when they were alive. The governess becomes convinced that their ghosts have returned to corrupt or possess Miles and Flora.
The central tension of the novella lies in uncertainty. The governess may truly be seeing ghosts, or she may be misinterpreting events because of fear, repression, loneliness, and imagination. The children’s behavior can seem innocent or sinister depending on how it is read. Henry James never gives the reader a fully stable explanation.
As the governess becomes more determined to save the children, her actions grow more intense and intrusive. Flora eventually rejects her and is taken away, while Miles remains with her at Bly. The final confrontation between the governess and Miles is emotionally charged and ambiguous.
In the ending, Miles dies in the governess’s arms after she believes she has defeated Quint’s influence. Yet the meaning of this death remains unresolved. The Turn of the Screw explores innocence, corruption, authority, repression, fear, and the terrifying possibility that the desire to protect can itself become destructive.
