Truth Comes Limping
A quiet, small English village borders the aristocratic Carfax estate. The mystery begins when a cash-carrying stranger named Miles Huggin is found shot dead in the undergrowth of Leisurely Lane. Despite the bullet wound, no weapon or bullet can be found at the scene.
The investigation quickly spirals to include local gossip, blackmail, an inheritance dispute regarding the true heir of the estate, and two subsequent murders (including the landowner, Druce Carfax).
Uniquely for a Golden Age mystery, toxophily (archery) plays a major role in explaining how the initial impossible murder was committed.
Connington was a "Humdrum" era contemporary admired by legendary figures like Dorothy L. Sayers and John Dickson Carr for his meticulous, fair-play puzzles. ''Truth Comes Limping'' is often considered a slower-paced entry in the series-true to its title, the resolution takes a while to emerge-but it is highly valued by fans of methodical, clues-based procedurals.
