George Macdonald

The Marquis of Lossie. Illustrated, de George Macdonald
Andrii Ponomarenko | 6 avril 2025

This beautifully illustrated edition brings together Malcolm and its sequel, The Marquis of Lossie, two of George MacDonald's most compelling historical novels. Set against the striking landscapes of 19th-century Scotland, these novels weave a powerful tale of identity, destiny, faith, and moral integrity. The story follows Malcolm MacPhail, a humble yet noble-spirited Scottish fisherman who unexpectedly discovers that his origins are far more illustrious than he ever imagined. As he grapples with the revelation of his true heritage, Malcolm finds himself caught between two worlds-one of simplicity and honesty, the other of aristocratic privilege and deceit. His journey takes him from the rugged coast of Scotland to the opulent halls of nobility, where he must navigate treacherous schemes, class struggles, and questions of love and loyalty. In The Marquis of Lossie, Malcolm's story continues as he embraces his rightful place in society, but with it comes the challenge of remaining true to his values in a world driven by power and ambition. Meanwhile, his relationship with the spirited Lady Florimel grows more complex, as she too must confront the realities of privilege, love, and moral awakening. MacDonald's masterful storytelling, deep philosophical insights, and beautifully drawn characters make this a timeless exploration of what it truly means to be noble-not by birth, but by virtue. These novels are rich in themes of divine providence, redemption, and social justice, making them a must-read for lovers of historical fiction and spiritually profound literature.

Andrii Ponomarenko | 4 avril 2025

The Wingfold Trilogy by George MacDonald is a profound and inspiring exploration of faith, doubt, redemption, and spiritual transformation. Paul Faber, Surgeon - In contrast to Wingfold, Paul Faber is a brilliant but skeptical doctor who prides himself on his atheism. However, life's unexpected trials and his love for a deeply religious woman force him to reconsider his worldview. This novel delves into the conflict between reason and faith, demonstrating how personal experience can reshape one's convictions. There and Back - The final installment continues the themes of redemption and moral awakening, portraying characters who struggle with past mistakes but ultimately find hope and transformation through faith and love. Ideal for readers of classic literature and Christian philosophy, this collection remains as relevant and thought-provoking today as it was in MacDonald's time.

Couverture ebook de The Hope of the Gospel. Illustrated, de George Macdonald
Andrii Ponomarenko | 4 avril 2025

The Hope of the Gospel is a profound and inspiring collection of theological essays by George MacDonald, a visionary writer and thinker whose works have influenced generations of Christian authors, including C.S. Lewis. In this collection, MacDonald explores the transformative power of Christ's teachings, emphasizing the boundless love of God, the necessity of faith in action, and the hope found in true spiritual renewal. Unlike traditional theological writings, MacDonald's approach is deeply personal and practical. He does not merely present doctrine but invites readers into a living, experiential faith-one that requires obedience, selflessness, and a genuine pursuit of righteousness. He challenges rigid interpretations of Christian beliefs, arguing that salvation is not just a distant promise but a present reality shaped by love, humility, and service to others. Key themes of The Hope of the Gospel include: God's Unconditional Love - MacDonald passionately defends the idea that God is not a vengeful judge but a loving Father who desires redemption for all. Faith in Daily Life - True faith, he argues, is not about passive belief but about actively living according to Christ's example. Couverture audiobook de St. George And St. Michael, Volume 1 (Unabridged), de George Macdonald
Slingshot Books LLC | 10 août 2022

'St. George and St. Michael' is a little-known historical romance telling the story of a young couple who find themselves on opposing sides during the tumultuous years of the English Civil Wars. Tensions are rising between king and parliament, the Church of England and the numerous independent puritans, and rumours abound that Charles I will soon declare open war on the dissident elements within his realm. Seventeen-year-old Dorothy Vaughan knows little of the brewing conflict, yet is sure that her loyalty must be with her king and her nation. When she challenges her childhood friend, Richard Heywood, to prove himself a man and so worthy of winning her hand in marriage by becoming involved in the larger events that surround them, he finds that his convictions - both political and spiritual - lie with his father's and the puritans. Determined to do what he believes is right, Richard finds that he cannot shake his immovable conscience, even for the woman he loves. Though it is, for the most part, a realistic novel, `St. George and St. Michael' is not without either the otherwordly atmosphere of the fantastic or the rich spiritual depth that characterises so much of MacDonald's writing. Couverture audiobook de Phantastes: A Faerie Romance For Men And Women (Unabridged), de George Macdonald
Slingshot Books LLC | 7 août 2022

An author who means to end a story with some variation of "And they all lived happily ever after" had better deal before that point not just with evil, strife, and terror but also with loss, failure, sacrifice, and death-or the ending will not be credible. And since such negative experiences do not easily lead to happy endings, only the best story-tellers succeed. George MacDonald is one of these. His protagonist, Anodos, discovers on the day he comes of age a path leading into an alternative reality, where a rite of passage awaits him: an entire lifetime in a land of marvels resembling childhood imaginings and medieval romances. The forces motivating him during his adventure, aside from the curiosity that induces him to enter Fairy Land in the first place, are a yearning after the feminine ideal and a desire to accomplish something worthwhile. Other people's kindness, love, wisdom, and high expectations support him, while malice, selfish exploitation, and tyranny challenge him. Nor are these hostile forces all purely external.Rarely has an author explored so searchingly as MacDonald the soul of a faithful squire and a rejected lover-for this is what Anodos is, when all is said and done. None of the most famous beta males in literature-certainly not Vergil's "faithful Achates," not Cervantes' unforgettable Sancho Panza, not even Homer's Eumaios -is portrayed with the richness, depth, and multi-dimensionality of MacDonald's visitor to Fairy Land. Just possibly Spenser's Timias could be MacDonald's model. Like Timias, Anodos accepts his supportive role with equanimity and even learns the value of unrequited love, and yet, also like Timias, he possesses courage, skill, and resolve. He also combats dark forces within himself, an effort that ultimately endows him with insight, surpassing his master's, into the darkness that masks as holiness-to oppose which he gladly sacrifices his life. Before that moment he has learned the bittersweet joy of sacrifice when his heart's desire, whom his longing and effort have freed from durance vile, prefers the love of a greater man, but it is only death that can teach him the joy and the power of loving without need, of giving without thought of reciprocation. And only that death which is self-abnegation can carry him across the threshold into manhood, which the future's inevitable adversity and defeats can never tarnish.

Couverture audiobook de The Hope Of The Gospel (Unabridged), de George MACDONALD
Slingshot Books LLC | 4 août 2022

Perhaps most well-known for his fairy tales and fantasy stories such as The Golden Key and Phantastes, or for his poetry, George MacDonald was a great spiritual master of the nineteenth century. He spent several years as a minister in his native Scotland; however he was forced to resign his position due to ill health. He had a profound influence on such later writers as G. K. Chesterton and C. S. Lewis - the latter of whom considered MacDonald to be his spiritual father, and edited an anthology of his works. In The Hope of the Gospel, with his ever sagely style, MacDonald explores the essential heart of the gospel that is so often overlooked, both in his day and ours. Dissatisfied with cheap and hasty interpretations of Scripture, MacDonald invites us beneath the surface in a heartfelt meditation on all that Christ came to accomplish.

Couverture audiobook de Lilith (Unabridged), de George Macdonald
Everest Media LLC | 7 avril 2022

Please note: This audiobook has been created using AI voice. Lilith, first published in 1895, tells the story of Mr. Vane, the owner of a library that seems to be haunted by a raven-the ghost of the library's former owner. Mr. Vane eventually follows this strange figure through a mirror and into another world, the "region of seven dimensions." There Vane meets a number of characters, including Biblical characters like Adam and his first wife Lilith. Thus begins a battle of good versus evil that reverberates through dimensions. The narrative is heavy with Christian allegory, and MacDonald uses the world to expound on his Christian universalist philosophy while telling a story of life, death and ultimately salvation. Critics consider Lilith to be one of MacDonald's darker works, but opinion on it is divided. Despite this, some critics praise it for its rich imagery, with scholar Neil Barron claiming that the novel is the "obvious parent of David Lindsay's A Voyage to Arcturus," itself a highly influential work of fantasy.
