Nine years ago she walked out and let this town call her a cheat.

Her brother was going down for twenty years and her mother had four boxes in a crawl space, and Mara sat in a federal building in March of 2017 and traded everything she had — and then, in nine seconds, she reordered the whole thing and bought a man who was not her blood out of an indictment he never knew he was in.
Before her own brother's sentence. She used the word before.
And she let the club call it another man, because a town will build a reason whether you give them one or not, and a cheat is survivable and a cooperator is not.
He does not care what she did. He cares that she left without a note.
Nine years, one empty kitchen table, and a piece of lined paper with a single letter on it that she has kept in a frame by the door ever since — because she started to write it, and stopped.
Now the whole county is about to read the truth, the man who ruined his arm is sitting on the docket, and the only two people who can put this right are the two who broke it.
