Originally published in 1929, Murder in the Moor introduces readers to the memorable Inspector Peregrine "Pithecanthropus" Smith, a subtly witty and perceptive detective whose holiday on Dartmoor turns into a thrilling investigation. The narrative opens with a grisly discovery: a man found dead on the windswept moor, killed by an unusual weapon. Despite having many enemies, no one seems to have been in the right place at the right time, and the case becomes a puzzle-part locked-room, part character mystery . Kindon's portrayal of Dartmoor is one of the novel's strengths. Early chapters bath the landscape in poetic, lyrical detail-mists, tors, bogs-creating a haunting and immersive setting reminiscent of both Ronald Knox and Chesterton more than conventional procedural crime fiction. This vivid moorland becomes almost a character in its own right, framing the dark drama that unfolds. Inspector Smith is refreshingly different from typical Golden Age detectives-unassuming, good-humored, and self-effacing. He balances official police procedure with a more reflective, almost armchair-detective approach. The novel also features a cast of eccentric locals and suspects, infused with gentle satire and warmth, drawing comparisons to Agatha Christie's handling of quirky personalities.
A chilling nursery rhyme becomes the blueprint for murder in The Bishop Murder Case (1929), one of the most ingenious and suspenseful entries in S. S. Van Dine's celebrated Philo Vance mystery series. When a prominent scientist is found dead-shot through the heart with an arrow-the crime scene is marked by an eerie clue: a reference to the old nursery rhyme about "Cock Robin." As more victims fall, each murder seems to mirror a sinister children's verse, and the city of New York is gripped with fear. Is a deranged killer playing a deadly game, or is there a deeper, more calculated motive behind the pattern? Philo Vance-brilliant, aristocratic, and unfailingly methodical-takes on the baffling case, untangling a web of riddles, cryptic messages, and hidden connections. As the body count rises, Vance must decipher the killer's twisted logic before the final verse of this murderous rhyme is written in blood. A masterful blend of psychological suspense, literary clues, and classic Golden Age detective fiction, The Bishop Murder Case is a must-read for fans of Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, and Sherlock Holmes. Van Dine's intricate plotting and intellectual approach to crime-solving make this novel one of the most compelling in the Philo Vance series.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The case for the use of fire being the decisive transformation in the fortunes of hominids is clear. Fire was mankind's oldest and greatest tool for reshaping the natural world. It was used to clear old vegetation and encourage a host of quick-colonizing grasses and shrubs, many of which bore desired seeds, berries, fruits, and nuts. #2 The use of fire to clear land and open the canopy was the key to humankind's growing sway over the natural world. The concentration of resources in this light places the milestones of the classical civilizational narrative in a new light. #3 The application of fire to raw food externalizes the digestive process, which allows us to eat far less food and expend far fewer calories extracting nutrition from it. The effects are enormous. #4 We are a fire-adapted species. We have adapted our habits, diet, and body to the characteristics of fire, and we are thus dependent on it. We are utterly dependent on fire.
