The man is addicted to morphine, and can think of nothing but death. Only morphine has made his life barely tolerable. He is in this fragile mental state because of the things that happened in the past; because of the things he was forced to encounter. During the First World War he ended up alone on an island - an island that was pure horror. `Dagon' is a horror short story written by H. P. Lovecraft. It was first published in 1917.
Basil Elton is a lighthouse keeper who has followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps - all of them have taken care of this very lighthouse. Elton is still fascinated by the ocean: blue, green, grey, white, or black; smooth, ruffled, or mountainous - the ocean is never silent. But Elton also has a special dream. He dreams about a magical white ship that would take him to places, far away from the lighthouse... H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American horror writer.

It is a golden rule: if you visit or move to a new area and the locals issue a chilling warning, abide by it. In books and films, the golden rule is to ignore it. Take ´American Werewolf in London´, where the two Americans stray off the path of the Yorkshire Moors and one of them is killed by a werewolf. In 'The Moon-Bog', an Irish-American reclaims his ancestral estate in Kilderry, Ireland. The superstitious local peasants plead with him not to drain the nearby bog. Which, of course, he does - with terrifying supernatural results. This short story is perfect for those already familiar with the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, or those simply looking for a quick scare. Howard Phillips (H.P.) Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author famed for his horror and fantasy fiction. Born in Rhode Island, he became a pioneer of `cosmic horror', conjuring up the lore of supernatural creatures who exist beyond our understanding. His best-known stories include "The Call of Cthulhu", "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Colour Out of Space". It is not advisable to become instant best friends with a mysterious man you have just met at a railway station - particularly if he has "immense, sunken and widely luminous eyes". The narrator of H.P. Lovecraft's 'Hypnos', a sculptor, went from 0-60 in a few seconds, and soon he was touching and sculpting his new friend every day. Creepy? It is just the beginning, as the narrator looks into the luminous eyes and embarks on drug-fueled trips around other worlds. What they see terrifies them, and they vow to avoid sleep. But sleep inevitably comes, with frightening consequences for them both. ´Hypnos´ will delight fans of H.P. Lovecraft or anyone looking for a short and scary read! Howard Phillips (H.P.) Having just endured the death of his son during the First World War, Delapore moves from the US to his ancestral property, Exham Priory, in England, seeking space and peace to mourn his loss. He begins to restore the estate - despite dire warnings from locals - and hears rats scurrying behind the walls. Joined by academics, he investigates - and discovers a truly spine-chilling family secret. His ancestors had an underground city populated by prisoners, some walking on all fours, who were kept to feed their desire for human flesh! As the sound of the scurrying rats grows to a cacophony in his ears, Delapore is seized by madness and the uncontrollable urge to feast on flesh. Fans of James Herbert's 'Rats' trilogy, 'The Rats', 'Lair', and 'Domain', will get a similar shiver from 'The Rats in the Walls'. There is also a taste of Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. He talks to bottles, collects strange stones and only "few know his real name". If the title of the short story is not enough, these facts about 'The Terrible Old Man' make it clear that he is not really approachable. But he is rumoured to have made a fortune while captaining East India Company clipper ships. Three robbers decide to ignore the unsettling aspects and head to his house to turn it over. Two of them go inside, with the third man waiting in the getaway car. Suddenly, the driver hears horrendous screaming coming from the house and the old man opens the gate, "smiling hideously". The getaway man goes to investigate and comes face-to-face with blood-soaked terror beyond his darkest nightmares. This short story is perfect for those already familiar with the writings of H. P. Please note: This audiobook has been created using AI voice. Howard Phillips Lovecraft was one of the most influential writers of horror fiction in the early 20th century. His fame is mostly posthumous: he was only published in pulp magazines in his lifetime, and never saw financial success. Despite that, Lovecraft's unique blend of gothicism, horror, and the supernatural, set in an imagined but eerilyreal New England, marked a gold standard for horror fiction for decades after his death. Readers of modern fantasy and horror fiction will certainly recognize Cthulhu, the tentaclemouthed god who lies asleep in a sunken Atlantean ruin; the Necronomicon, a grimoire of unspeakable power and horror penned by the "mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred; and the dark, twisted New England countryside of the Miskatonic Valley. These and other features take shape in Lovecraft's stories, creating a backdrop of the bizarre and evil behind seemingly daytoday lives. A thread of cosmic horror soon turns anything normal towards madness. This edition is small because verifying the U.S. public domain status of Lovecraft's corpus is a difficult, if not impossible, academic exercise, and finding firstedition copies to transcribe is also difficult. This edition will be updated as more transcriptions become verified and available. Included in this edition are some of Lovecraft's juvenalia-in particular, "The Alchemist" was written when he was just seventeen or eighteen.
