Saga Egmont | 17 April 2022

Given the wrong name at baptism and accidentally circumcised by a sash window at age five - Tristram Shandy had a difficult start to life. His luck never changed - but the hero of Laurence Sterne's great comic novel battled on against "this scurvy and disastrous world of ours". He is joined by the likes of Uncle Toby, Corporal Trim, Parson Yorick, Dr Slop and the Widow Wadman as he faces misfortune head-on, with a sardonic smile. The book, an "autobiography", was originally published in nine volumes over eight years. It sees Shandy getting into scrapes, while launching into stream-of-consciousness tirades about subjects including sexual practices, insults, the human nose, siege warfare and obstetrics. This hilarious and heart-warming book is perfect for fans of Charles Dickens and Jonathan Swift. In 2006, the book was adapted into the movie 'A Cock and Bull Story', starring Steve Coogan, Rob Brydon and Keeley Hawes. Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) was an Anglo-Irish novelist and Anglican cleric who also dabbled in local politics. After becoming a vicar, he published his ecclesiastical satire 'A Political Romance', which infuriated Church leaders and was burnt. He then published successive volumes of his classic comic novel 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman'. He travelled to France to relieve tuberculosis and wrote 'A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy' shortly before his death.

Saga Egmont | 13 February 2022

ebook cover of A Political Romance, by Laurence Sterne
Saga Egmont | 2 October 2022

Considered scandalous at the time, `A Political Romance' is a satirical look at the relationship between the Church and the Law. Written before Sterne's `Tristram Shandy' books (later adapted for film, as `A Cock and Bull Story, starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon), it tells the tale of a small-town quarrel between a dean, an archbishop, and an ecclesiastical lawyer. While you might think their argument might be something to do with spiritual issues, it is actually over a greatcoat. Did this book deserve to be burned after its publication? Decide for yourself, with this superb read from one of the greats of the 18th Century. Born in Ireland, Laurence Sterne (1713 - 1768) was the son of a commissioned officer in the British army. As a result, the first 10 years of his life were spent travelling from place to place. However, at the age of 11, he was sent to boarding school in England, under the care of his brother. After leaving Jesus College with a Bachelor of Arts, he was ordained both a priest and a deacon. While he had previously written for the `York Gazetteer', Sterne's uncle encouraged him to write for political journals, much to the consternation of the rest of the family. This was followed by his first novel, ´A Political Romance´, which also put religion under the spotlight. After failing in the role of a farmer, he wrote his most famous book, `The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.' Six years later, he was to become part of the abolitionist movement, after publicly replying to a letter from former slave, writer, and composer, Ignatius Sancho. Sterne died in London, aged 54.

Saga Egmont | 2 October 2022

Set during the `Seven Years War' between England and France, `A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy' was one of Sterne's last works. Seen as the epilogue to his `Tristram Shandy' books (later adapted for film, as `A Cock and Bull Story´, starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon), it tells the tale of Yorick, as he travels between the two countries. While visiting Paris, Yorick is discovered to be without a passport. When he flees to Versailles in order to get one, he is mistaken for the jester in Shakespeare's `Hamlet'. Will he be able to escape imprisonment, or is the game up for our hero? A superb satire on another author's less-than-sentimental travelogue through the same countries. Slingshot Books LLC | 26 September 2022

This is volume 3 of 4.The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (or, more briefly, Tristram Shandy) is a novel by Laurence Sterne. It was published in nine volumes, the first two appearing in 1759, and seven others following over the next 10 years. It was not always held in high esteem by other writers (Samuel Johnson responded that, "Nothing odd can last"), but its bawdy humour was popular with London society, and it has come to be seen as one of the greatest comic novels in English, as well as a forerunner for many modern narrative devices.

Slingshot Books LLC | 5 August 2022

After the bizarre textual antics of "Tristram Shandy", this book would seem to require a literary health warning. Sure enough, it opens in mid-conversation upon a subject never explained; meanders after a fashion through a hundred pages, then fizzles out in mid-sentence - so, a plotless novel lacking a beginning, a middle or an end. Let us say: an exercise in the infinitely comic. "There is not a secret so aiding to the progress of sociality, as to get master of this short hand, and to be quick in rendering the several turns of looks and limbs with all their inflections and delineations, into plain words." Sterne calls his fine sensitivity to body language "translation". Much of the pleasure to be had from this wonderfully engaging book comes from his unmatched ability to extract random details from the chaos of experience to create comic turns imbued with Feeling. His Parson Yorick is the Sentimental Traveller: certainly a Man of Feeling, but one in whom "Nature has so wove her web of kindness, that some threads of love and desire are entangled with the piece..."

Please note: This audiobook has been created using AI voice. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, a fictional autobiography of the eponymous narrator, contains-perhaps surprisingly-little about either his life or opinions, but what it does have is a meandering journey through the adventures of his close family and their associates. The book is famous for being more about the explanatory diversions and rabbitholes that the narrator takes us down than the actual happenings he set out to describe, but in doing so he paints a vivid picture of the players and their personal stories. Published two volumes at a time over the course of eight years, Tristram Shandy was an immediate commercial success although not without some confusion among critics. Sterne's exploration of form that pushed at the contemporary limits of what could be called a novel has been hugely influential, garnering admirers as varied as Marx, Schopenhauer, Joyce, Woolf and Rushdie. The book has been translated into many other languages and adapted for the stage, radio, and film.
