"Decadenza" è uno dei romanzi a tematica psicologica di Luigi Gualdo ed è forse quello più riuscito, oltre che il più originale. Il titolo del libro descrive bene il suo contenuto: il protagonista, Paolo, è infatti un uomo che procede verso una lenta, ma inesorabile, degradazione. È un uomo che da ambizioso e vitale diventa un pessimista esistenziale a causa di insuccessi professionali, ma anche amorosi. Se ci pensiamo è anche un romanzo estremamente moderno visto che quella noia immotivata, quell'inerzia morale, quel male di vivere e quel senso di inutilità è tipica della società odierna. Insomma, "Decadenza" è un romanzo esistenziale ante litteram a tutti gli effetti. Luigi Gualdo (1847 - 1898) è stato uno scrittore e poeta italiano, francese d'adozione. Scrive due romanzi in francese ("Une ressemblance" e "Une mariage excentrique). Oltre alla raccolta delle "Novelle" e una raccolta di poesie ("Le nostalgie), scrive due romanzi ("Costanza Gerardi" e "Decadenza") di gusto decadente e con una tematica psicologica. Gualdo era un uomo di cultura, un artista solitario, ma anche mondano, diviso tra i salotti milanesi e quelli parigini.
