ebook cover of Last Known Address, by Kathy Kacer
Second Story Press | 9 March 2026

Embedded into the cobblestones of Europe are Stolpersteine-stumbling stones. Carefully hand-chiseled with names and dates, these small, brass plaques make up the largest monument to the Holocaust in the world. Today, you can find over 100,000 stones across Europe. The Stumbling Stones Project was begun by artist Gunter Demnig as a way to remember that each victim of the Holocaust had a life that was terribly and tragically stolen. Each memorial plaque is placed outside the last voluntary address of the person-the homes from which they were arrested and often taken to concentration camps. Not all were Jewish, some were persecuted for being Romani, disabled, or queer, and not all shared the same fate. These stories include that of a resistance fighter, an art conservator, an Olympian, and the young Anne Frank. Take a journey around Europe to learn their stories.

ebook cover of In the Long Shadows, by Bear Meawasige
Second Story Press | 12 October 2026

Key Selling Points: Book one in The Long Shadows series, a new adventure fantasy YA series told from an Indigenous perspective. For fans of YA fantasy authors Cherie Dimaline (The Marrow Thieves), Richard Van Camp (Beast), and who grew up on David A. Robertson's Misewa Saga and Gary Robinson's books. In the Long Shadows was the winner of the 2025 Second Story Press Indigenous Writing Contest, judged by bestselling author Richard Van Camp, Sandra Samatte of Indigenous wholesaler GoodMinds.com, and Jordan Ryder, Managing Editor at Second Story Press. Sandra Samatte of GoodMinds.com praised In the Long Shadows: "This fantasy fiction, for a young adult audience, is beautifully descriptive, immersive, animated, and relational. This is a powerful story of hope and resilience." This is author Bear Meawasige's debut book. Bear is of mixed Ojibwe and Scottish ancestry and is a member of Serpent River First Nation in Ontario. Features an atmospheric, immersive setting full of compelling, adventurous characters. There's a mystery element to this fantasy novel, with the eeriness of the deserted castles and cities of the stonefolk, a strange colonialist people from somewhere beyond the sea who once waged war and tried to subjugate the Indigenous clans. Suddenly, seemingly overnight, they disappeared. Although the clans forbid anyone from entering the ruins of the stonefolk, Leaf and others are drawn to the ruins, seeking answers to their questions. The book is a fantasy-filtered examination of settler colonialism, seen through the eyes of the young people living in the shadow of this history. The statues that scar the land are seen as the gravestone of a deeply self-destructive people. Traditionally heroic figures like knights and kings are looked upon as figures of terror. Not symbols of glory, but symbols of terrible loss, kidnapped children, and an attempt at cultural genocide.

ebook cover of Bernice and the Wild Waters, by Jessica Outram
Second Story Press | 21 September 2026

Key Selling Points: Book two in the Shining Waters series for middle grade readers. It follows book one, Bernice and the Georgian Bay Gold, which won the CCBC's Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People, was a Junior Library Guild (JLG) Gold Standard Selection, and was widely praised by Booklist, Anishinabek News, Historical Novel Society, and more. There are very few children's books with Métis characters. Although fictional, the story is inspired by the author's family story, in particular her great-aunt Bernice, who was like a grandmother to Jessica Outram. Bernice and the Wild Waters continues the story of brave, adventurous Bernice. In book one, young Bernice finds what she thinks is a treasure map, and goes in search of treasure to help her family financially. In book two, the tone of the book is more serious, although Bernice once again wants to help her family. Bernice's mom is afraid for the safety of Bernice and her siblings since an Indian Agent has been spotted in town. They're taking Indigenous children away to Indian Residential Schools. When Bernice's cousins go missing, they fear the worst. Bernice and her brothers go in search of them, as they'll do anything to help them. This book shares an Ontario Métis story including history, culture, perspective, and the Michif-Fransè language. The series will appeal to young readers who enjoy historical fiction and adventure stories. The book features a strong female character who values the land, water, family, music, and freedom. The story talks about the difficult history for many Indigenous families, and how some families tried to hide their Indigeneity in order to protect their children from being taken to Indian Residential Schools.  Written by Métis author Jessica Outram, who has a deep love for and knowledge of the Georgian Bay landscape, where these adventures take place.

ebook cover of Poh Poh's Sword, by Julia Hune-Brown
Second Story Press | 14 September 2026

Key Selling Points: Author Julia Hune-Browne based this book on her grandmother, Gar Yin Hune. She first told this family story in a radio documentary for CBC Radio. Hune-Brown describes her grandmother as being bold, outspoken, funny, and brave. She wrote this story to show how proud she is to be Gar Yin Hune's granddaughter. Poh Poh's Sword is an immigration story, a story of feminist empowerment, and a story of connection between generations. A little girl learns about how determined her grandmother was when she was young, and how her Poh Poh found a way to provide for herself, escape a war, and make a life for herself in a very different and often hostile country. The picture book also sheds light on the history of anti-Asian racism in North America, particularly the restrictions on Chinese immigration and the exclusion of Chinese people/families in the 19th and 20th centuries. In her author's note, Hune-Browne talks about her grandmother's personal story as well as the greater story of Chinese immigration to North America, including the fact that Chinese male labourers greatly shaped both Canada and the USA by building railways across the continent, while paying unfair head taxes and facing laws designed to keep them from bringing their families to join them. Showing a family separated by circumstance, by war, and by racist laws is relatable today for many immigrant families. Julia Hune-Brown's grandmother's story had always been one of family legends. But only by researching it as an adult did Hune-Brown realize how unique it really was. In 1938, thanks to her success in the Cantonese Opera, Gar Yin Hune came to Canada as a woman during a time when almost all Chinese immigration was banned. Because of the Chinese head tax and then the Chinese Exclusion Act, it was rare to see Chinese women in Canada. When Gar Yin Hune arrived, only seven per cent of the Chinese population in Canada were women. An accomplished theatre artist and educator, this is Toronto-based author Julia Hune-Brown's first book. Hayley Lowe, based in Vancouver, brings Poh Poh's story to vibrant life with her illustrations of the cantonese opera and Poh Poh's sword dancing. She has illustrated a number of books to great acclaim, including Second Story Press' Memory Stones (2025). She wrote and illustrated The Pie Reports (Orca, 2024) which received a starred review from School Library Journal.

ebook cover of Luckily Ever After Olive Tran, by Phuong Truong
Second Story Press | 7 September 2026

Key Selling Points: The Olive Tran early reader series has received incredible praise: Book one, Every Little Bit Olive Tran, received a starred review from Quill and Quire, and rave reviews from School Library Journal, Booklist, the Canadian Children's Book News, and more. It's also been shortlisted for the 2026 Ontario Library Association Silver Birch Express Award AND the 2026 Jane Addams Children's Book Award which honours books that engage with themes of social justice and equity for all! This third book in the series continues to follow the lovable Olive Tran through her grade four year. In book one, Every Little Bit Olive Tran, Olive learns the importance of kindness when supporting her community in the face of Anti-Asian racism. In book two, Take a Breath Olive Tran, Olive has to figure out why she gets so carried away sometimes when her excitement and stress over the talent show becomes too much. And now in book three, Luckily Ever After Olive Tran, Olive is beyond excited that Lunar New Year and Valentine's Day are on the same day! That must mean something special, right? It will if Olive has something to say about it! When Olive notices how long it's been since her mom went on a date, she decides love will be in the air. What could go wrong? Olive's strong, distinct voice adds humour and personality to the stories. She's very relatable to kids and a well-rounded character: she's creative, loyal, and thoughtful, but her perfectionism, anxiety, and scheming can be too much sometimes (for herself and others). In book 3, Olive is so focused on setting up her mother for Valentine's Day, she almost misses that someone in her class has a crush on her! A multi-generational story, Olive often turns to her mother and Bà Nôi (grandmother) for support. Olive is very much a foodie, and one way she connects with her family is through food and cooking delicious Vietnamese dishes. In Luckily Ever After Olive Tran, Olive tries to support her mother through a matchmaking scheme, as she worries her mother is lonely. Part of the scheme involves setting up her mother to bake cupcakes with the dad of one of Olive's friends. Features delightful spot illustrations by Christine Wei which help bring the story to life. She also did the illustrations for Every Little Bit Olive Tran and Truong's debut picture book Everyone is Welcome. Everyone is Welcome was a Bookstagram Picture Book Award winner for Best of Illustration!

ebook cover of The Dog Heist, by Dani Jansen
Second Story Press | 31 August 2026

Key Selling Points: The Dog Heist will appeal to young readers who enjoy adventure stories, animal rescue, and kids taking initiative. Valery and Caleb want to help the dog Lyra, so they decide to take matters into their own hands. The book treats middle graders as agents of change, who sometimes know better than adults. The Dog Heist is a heartfelt, humorous, and compelling story with high stakes moments. Young readers will find both Valery and Caleb relatable and refreshing. The two perspectives, a nerdy girl and impulsive boy, allow the story to appeal to a broad audience. As they're very different, Valery and Caleb initially dislike each other. But they become close friends when they come together to help the dog, Lyra. The Dog Heist features several underrepresented, necessary perspectives for young readers. Valery describes herself as fat, and is not focused on losing weight or looking at her size as a problem. Valery is also questioning why she doesn't seem to be developing sexual feelings like her friends, and she wonders about what it means to be asexual. The book also showcases neurodiversity in a realistic, empathetic way, as Caleb navigates his ADHD symptoms throughout. These include fidgeting and high energy, which get him in trouble with a teacher who does not understand. Middle school and junior high are a unique, awkward time for young people. The Dog Heist shows young people trying to navigate increasingly complex friendships, the beginnings of romantic relationships, as well as figuring out their sexuality. Dani Jansen is the previous author of the award-winning YA novel, The Year Shakespeare Ruined My Life. The Dog Heist is her first book for middle grade readers. As a longtime English and drama teacher, Jansen writes the voices of young people in a believable, fresh way.

ebook cover of Hidden Lives, by
Second Story Press | 3 November 2025

One and a half million Jewish children were murdered in the Holocaust. The Nazis' goal to eradicate the entire Jewish population in Europe included children-from infants to teenagers-who were targeted as part of the coordinated genocide that led to the murder of six million Jews. Those children who survived were often hidden: in convents, orphanages, haylofts, forests-even sewers.  Hidden Lives is a collection of true stories written by the youngest survivors of the Holocaust. Desperation compelled parents to make the agonizing decision to leave their children with strangers or to let them fend on their own. Many were too young to understand why they were being left behind, often under assumed identities. While the vast majority of these children were orphaned by the end of the war, some were reunited with family who, in many cases, now seemed like strangers. Their accounts are marked with fear, confusion, and abandonment, as well as a loss of their Jewish identity. These true stories are profiles of bravery: of the children who survived in often terrible circumstances, of the parents and families who were forced to leave them behind, and of the many people-including Christian families, many times complete strangers-who risked their lives to save them.

How did Hitler and the Nazi Party convince millions of people that the murder of Jews during the Holocaust was not only justifiable but correct? What can we learn from one of the most horrific times in history?  Can Posters Kill? uses rare, historical posters to take readers on a visual journey from medieval anti-Jewish artwork to the venomous Nazi propaganda of the Second World War. These posters show how powerful propaganda can be as a tool for spreading hate: how repetition, vivid imagery, and urgent messaging promote intense emotional reactions-fear, distrust, loyalty, revulsion-that can be used to create a coordinated campaign to impact the way we think. By understanding the visual language of propaganda from the past, we can learn to recognize and resist messages of hate-an essential skill in a digital world where information is spread in seconds.

ebook cover of Women Who Woke up the Law, by Karin Wells
Second Story Press | 3 March 2025

From the award-winning author of The Abortion Caravan and More Than a Footnote "Who was the woman trying to convince a jury in a tiny courthouse in Nova Scotia that it was self-defense when she killed her partner; and who was the young woman walking into the palais de justice in small-town Quebec arguing that it was her choice, not his, to have an abortion? What was it that pushed these women on, even when the lawyers said it was hopeless?" Karin Wells once again pulls us into the lives-and this time, the legal trials-of a group of women integral to the advancement of women's rights in Canada. Eliza Campbell, Chantale Daigle, Jeannette Corbiere Lavell-these Women Who Woke Up the Law often had no idea what they were facing in the courts, or the price they would have to pay. Some never saw justice themselves, but they left a legal legacy. Their bold determination is something we need now more than ever to guard the hard-won gains in women's rights.
